At Sunbird Brewing Company, we are dedicated to crafting exceptional beer while also prioritising sustainability. We believe in being responsible stewards of the environment and doing our part to protect it and more than ever, we are committed to sustainability across all aspects of our business, from the ingredients we use in our beer to the way we package and transport it.

ingredients & SUPPLY CHAIN

We take pride in sourcing our malt from Joe White Maltings, where we have access to the finest sun-drenched Australian grains. Joe White Maltings is strategically located near premium barley growing areas, enabling us to obtain the highest quality ingredients. Additionally, with the shortest distance of transportation to Singapore, we are able to greatly reduce our carbon footprint and do our part to protect the environment.

conserving energy

We reduce our environmental impact through energy-saving initiatives in our brewery. Here are some of the steps we are taking to conserve energy:

  • We have installed energy-saving motion sensor lighting throughout the brewery, ensuring that lights are only on when needed and reducing electricity consumption.

  • Our cooling system is fully insulated to prevent heat loss and reduce energy consumption in maintaining the beers cold in the fermentation vessels.

  • We recycle the water used for wort cooling process back into the hot liquor tank, reducing energy consumption while heating up brewing water.

minimising waste to maximise resources

We take steps to handle waste in a sustainable way:

  • We produce spent grains with every brew, but we are proud to partner with local businesses to upcycle them. Our spent grains are given a second life in black soldier flies farm and granola bakeries, reducing waste and supporting our community.

  • Spent yeast is often discarded in the brewing process, but we creatively work with a local barbequed meat distributor to enhance the flavors and texture of their products through our spent yeast. This helps us to reduce waste while also contributing to the local food industry.

  • We recognize that fermenting beer produces CO2, and we are investing in gas filtration equipment to purify and reuse the CO2 produced in our brewery.

packaging & transporting

In 2021, we made a bold decision to transition from bottles to cans in our packaging department. We took extra steps to ensure that our beers are always packaged fresh and that we do not hold up too much inventory. This transition has helped us to reduce our carbon footprint by 8g of CO2 emissions for every can of beer, while also making our packaging more convenient and portable for our customers.

We are also planning to transition to delivering all Sunbird products with electric vehicles by 2024. This will allow us to reduce our carbon footprint even further, while also contributing to cleaner air and a more sustainable future for all.
